Spelling

At Marden Lodge, we use Spelling Shed to support the teaching and learning of spelling. Spelling Shed uses repeated practice, short-term retrieval and small-step goal achievement to support learning.  We are dedicated to delivering high-quality spelling instruction through the scheme and this ensures that all students benefit from a structured, engaging and effective approach to spelling. 

Children have three spelling lessons a week, which continue to build upon their phonetic knowledge taught through the Read Write Inc. programme. These lessons are designed to introduce new spelling patterns and rules in a systematic way. Children develop their knowledge of English orthography based on how patterns of letters are used to make certain spoken sounds; morphology which describes how words are structured and etymology which explores the origins of words.
